YOGA ALIGNMENT - TUESDAYS - 5:30-7 PM at MaMA
"Yoga, an ancient but perfect science, deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being, from bodily health to self-realization. Yoga means union - the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul. Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions." B.K.S. Iyengar
YOGA ALIGNMENT classes are based on the teachings and methods of yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar. This system emphasizes:
proper body alignment to maximize the flow of energy and breath, and to develop evenness without injury or pain. Use of props - such as blankets, blocks, belts and chairs - make the benefits and practice of the asanas (poses) more accessible at every level.
timing - as the practice develops, asanas are held longer - to develop stability, and to allow their effects of toning and regulating to penetrate deeper, moving from the outer gross body (physical) to the inner subtle bodies (organic, mental, emotional).
sequencing for achieving maximum benefit from each session, and for a specific cumulative effect. Each class focuses on a different range and sequence of asanas, depending on the needs of the students, and other factors such as weather and time of day. Progressively, a wide range of asanas are learned through repetition and refinement.
Consistent practice naturally increases postural integrity, strength and flexibility, stamina, balance and coordination. On a deeper level, focused awareness, deep relaxation, receptivity and sensitivity develop, leading the way to meditation. This balances the flow of energy and has a unifying effect through the whole mind-body.
